This tool plots your whole menu on a live matrix and builds a printable report. It needs a full-size screen to run.
Open on a laptop or desktop to run it with your own menu.

This tool uses a live matrix chart, detailed tables and multi-column inputs designed for a laptop or desktop. You can still use it here, but some elements may not display correctly and can be harder to navigate on a smaller screen.
Menu strategy
Plot every menu item by how well it sells and how much it makes — see at a glance what to feature, reprice, rework or cut.
This tool sorts every dish on your menu into four groups — by how popular it is and how much profit it makes — so you can see at a glance what to feature, reprice, rework or remove.
The tool finds the average contribution and average units sold across your whole menu, then places each item against those two averages: above average on both = Star; profitable but below-average sales = Puzzle; popular but below-average profit = Plough horse; below average on both = Dog.
Enter each item's cost (ex VAT), gross price and units sold — paste straight from a spreadsheet, or use the template buttons below.
This table is wide — scroll it sideways to see every column.
Your menu items are grouped below by sales volume and contribution margin. Each category carries a recommended action.
Profitable but sell slowly.
ActionImprove menu placement, add a tempting description, or bundle them with a Star to lift sales.
Popular and profitable.
ActionFeature them prominently and protect the recipe, portion and price.
Low sales and low margin.
ActionCut them from the menu, unless you can rework the recipe to lower the cost or raise the price.
Popular but low margin.
ActionNudge the price up a little or trim the recipe cost — small gains add up over high volume.
The dividers mark the menu averages — items to the right sell above average, items above earn above-average contribution per unit. Contribution is gross profit after food costs, before labour and overheads.
